Privacy Policy

This policy explains what personal data Linefinder collects when you use this website, why we collect it, and what rights you have under the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.

Last updated: 21 October 2026

Who we are

Linefinder is an independent broadband comparison website, published under the Linefinder name. We are not a broadband provider, an agent for any provider, or a broker — we do not sell, install or support any telecoms service.

For the purposes of the UK GDPR, Linefinder is the data controller for personal data processed through this website. You can contact us about privacy matters at privacy@linefinder.co.uk.

What we collect

We keep data collection to the minimum needed to run a comparison site:

  • Postcode. When you enter a postcode, it is used in your browser to look up available packages. It is not stored on our servers and is not linked to your identity.
  • Technical data. Our hosting and security provider processes your IP address, browser type, referring page and requested URL in server logs, in order to deliver the site and protect it from abuse.
  • Aggregate analytics. We use privacy-friendly, cookieless analytics that record page views and referrers without setting cookies or building a profile of you.
  • Correspondence. If you email us, we keep your message and our reply for as long as needed to deal with your enquiry.

We do not ask for your name, address, payment details or account credentials, and we do not run a newsletter or user account system.

Why we are allowed to process it

  • Legitimate interests (Article 6(1)(f)) — operating a working website, keeping it secure, and understanding aggregate traffic levels.
  • Legal obligation (Article 6(1)(c)) — retaining records where tax or company law requires it.
  • Consent (Article 6(1)(a)) — only where we explicitly ask, for example if you opt in to something in future. You can withdraw consent at any time.

Cookies

This site does not set advertising or profiling cookies. For the full breakdown of what is stored and why, see our Cookie Policy.

Who we share data with

  • Our hosting, CDN and security provider — to serve the site and block malicious traffic.
  • Our email provider — to receive and store messages you send us.
  • Professional advisers or authorities — where we are legally required to disclose information.

We do not sell personal data, and we do not share it with broadband providers. When you click through to a provider's website, you become subject to that provider's own privacy policy.

International transfers

Our infrastructure providers may process data outside the UK. Where that happens, transfers rely on the UK International Data Transfer Addendum or an adequacy decision, and appropriate safeguards are in place.

How long we keep it

  • Server logs: up to 30 days, unless retained longer for a specific security investigation.
  • Aggregate analytics: retained in non-identifying form for up to 24 months.
  • Email correspondence: up to 24 months after the matter is closed.

Your rights

Under the UK GDPR you have the right to:

  • be informed about how your data is used;
  • access the personal data we hold about you;
  • have inaccurate data corrected;
  • have data erased where there is no good reason for us to keep it;
  • restrict or object to processing;
  • data portability, where processing is based on consent or contract;
  • withdraw consent at any time, where consent is the basis for processing.

To exercise any of these, email privacy@linefinder.co.uk. We respond within one month, and will tell you if we need longer.

Complaints

If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, please contact us first so we can try to put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the site develops. The "last updated" date at the top always reflects the current version, and material changes will be flagged on the homepage.
